Mayor Reed led the effort to incorporate a non-discrimination ordinance in the City’s Code of Ordinances to promote diverse, inclusive opportunities for businesses and residents – one of the first Alabama leaders to do so. Not only does it ensure an equitable bid process, but it is a tool for recruitment and economic growth. In fact, a multi-million development prospect reconsidered moving to Montgomery after seeing Mayor Reed’s work.
Increased the number of minority businesses participating in City contracting process by 300%.
Launched several new health initiatives, including the Central Alabama Neighborhood Health Initiative (CANHI) as a solution to the increased disparity in healthcare, especially for rural communities and communities of color.
This included a system of door-to-door canvassing that would breakdown access barriers to healthcare by bringing healthcare workers to the people.
Launched Montgomery’s Homeless Task Force and put together Homeless Action Plan to ensure temporary/to/permanent housing and access to services for those experiencing homelessness.
