As a member of the NLC’s Reimaging Policing Committee, Mayor Reed is leading to solve the national surge in violent crime. He has invested in innovative public safety technology and training programs – including $500,000 for a new gunfire detection (ShotSpotter) network, license plate readers and cameras – while also authorizing double-digit percentage pay increases for Montgomery police officers and firefighters.
Homicides dropped more than 20%, year over year, in 2022.
However, Mayor Reed understands this national crime problem did not start overnight and it cannot be solved overnight. To target the root causes of crime, Mayor Reed created the Office of Violence Prevention, which will work to interrupt and address root causes of crime in our community.
MPD took 1,600 illegal guns off the streets.
Mayor Reed stood with Montgomery’s district attorney in support of increasing the bail for murder from $150,000 to more than one million dollars.
